Poker cheating IV

September 22nd, 2008

Even gambling games like poker should be played with some code of honesty, not by letters of law but by spirit of a game. A very dubious method of cheating in poker games is the concept of angle shooting which involves exploitation of certain game rules which are not technically illegitimate but should not be practiced so as not to have an undue advantage. A case in point is the player who makes a pretended motion of hand gesture that he is going to fold his hand but not actually doing so whereas his opponents, deceived by his hand movement, fold their own hands.

There is a form of angle shooting that is found most common in online poker games rather than casino or home games. This is the misuse of the disconnect protection rule which states that if any player is mistakenly disconnected from the online game room while a hand of pay is in progress, his hand is, by default, assumed to have gone all-in even as he himself put no more dough in the pot. To prevent gross exploitation of this rule by unscrupulous gamblers, online poker sites only allow this rule to be used in particular game tables where every player knows that this rule may be applied and not taken unaware. The method of using disconnect protection rule by cheating players is that if he is unsure how good his hand is and is unwilling to put more money in the pot, he can disconnect his internet connections and wait till his hand is played, by default, assuming he has gone all-in even though he did not do so. So, now if the cheater really has the best cards which he received after the remaining cards in the hand has been dealt on assumption of him going all-in, he ends up winning the pot. In case of several opponents vying for the pot, he may be qualified to win the side pot.
