Poker cheating V

September 22nd, 2008

One of the commonest form of cheating in any games, more so in gambling games where high money is at stake, is collusion among the players and poker is no exception.

In poker games, it is often found that sometimes two or more of the players are in a secret understanding among themselves and acting out of collusion. So arises the situation of soft play where a player does not bet or raise even when he is capable of doing it so that to safeguard his secret partner’s interests. There also may be cases of whipsawing where players who are in collusion raise and reraise continually to take the game away from the opponents or dumping where one dishonest gambler will deliberately lose against his confederate. In real casinos and also home games, signaling is the most effective and subtle form of cheating is used whereby players in collusion will exchange information about the game through some predetermined indications such as arrangement of the chip stack in a particular fashion might have a meaning.

In online poker games, where games are played virtually, it is not very easy to track cheaters using collusion method if they do it expertly. Here, players may call each other or exchange SMSs and share information about the cards and because everyone is playing online, it cannot be supervised and checked. Another method of cheating in online games of poker when the same person is playing giving different names from two or more terminals using separate IP addresses. Although this form of cheating is the hardest to counter, online casinos offering poker and other gambling games keep a detailed statistics about each hand of play and collusion can be exposed if there is a certain pattern in gameplay like folding a good hand knowing the associate can win the pot with a better hand.

In a poker tournament with a three player situation, when one goes all-in, the other two players generally play the ‘check it down’ game which is not collusion unless they appear to do it by evident mutual understanding.
