Poker freeroll I

September 22nd, 2008

Often in poker games there arises a situation, especially when all except two players are left in the fray for the pot and the last and final card is yet to be dealt. If in this case one player is certain to split the pot with his opponent regardless of what card he receives but has a definitive chance to win the entire pot if certain cards are dealt to him, then such a condition is called freeroll situation. This is most frequent in high/low split poker games where a player has such an assured low hand which he knows his opponent cannot better, no matter what the last card is even as he knows that a probable lucky card can give him a straight or a flush hand, thereby enabling to scoop the pot.

An illustration from a Texas hold ‘em game can best explain the freeroll situation in poker play. For example, if the first player has a king and 10 of clubs and his opponent has a hand of a king and 10 of hearts and at the end of turn round the board has the four cards of an ace of spades, queen of hearts, jack of hearts and a 4 of spades; then it can be calculated that both players have a straight hand with an ace high, the best possible in the current situation which would mean the players can split the pot. But if the river card turns out to be a clubs, then the second player’s straight hand will be beaten by the first player’s flush hand. Since no final card is likely enough to give the second player any chance of making a better outcome than a split, it is evident only the first player has the potential to improve his hand. So, this situation in the poker game is called freeroll where the first player is said to be freerolling the second player.
