Apart from a strategic play, the term freeroll in poker is also applicable to those tournaments where the participants are not liable to pay any entry fee to take part. However, it is important to remember not to confuse and to be able to distinguish between the terms ‘free’ and ‘no entry fee’. The confusion arises from the fact that some freeroll poker tournaments do require its participants to pay some charges at some stage of the competition. These tournaments don’t build up their pot to be paid as payout by accumulating entry fees after deducting the house rake. Rather, the prize money of freeroll tournaments are contributed by a donation from the casino house, charges amassed from selling sponsorship and broadcast rights, the money taken from spectators to allow them a right to enter and see the players in action or by a combination of all these. It has been known that some cardrooms or some real or online casinos frequently arrange freeroll tournaments for those gamblers who are their regular patrons. But if the river card turns out to be a clubs, then the second player’s straight hand will be beaten by the first player’s flush hand. Since no final card is likely enough to give the second player any chance of making a better outcome than a split, it is evident only the first player has the potential to improve his hand. So, this situation in the poker game is called freeroll where the first player is said to be freerolling the second player.

In poker games, it is often found that sometimes two or more of the players are in a secret understanding among themselves and acting out of collusion. So arises the situation of soft play where a player does not bet or raise even when he is capable of doing it so that to safeguard his secret partner’s interests. There also may be cases of whipsawing where players who are in collusion raise and reraise continually to take the game away from the opponents or dumping where one dishonest gambler will deliberately lose against his confederate. The method of using disconnect protection rule by cheating players is that if he is unsure how good his hand is and is unwilling to put more money in the pot, he can disconnect his internet connections and wait till his hand is played, by default, assuming he has gone all-in even though he did not do so. So, now if the cheater really has the best cards which he received after the remaining cards in the hand has been dealt on assumption of him going all-in, he ends up winning the pot. In case of several opponents vying for the pot, he may be qualified to win the side pot.

Use of marked cards in poker games is obviously prohibited but still is found in play sometimes which enables the cheating player to know the card value even when the cards are all face down. While card marking can be done in any number of ways, the most common methods employed by dishonest gamblers include drawing a circle on the back of the card. This is then interpreted as a clock with an ace card standing for one o’clock with the king card (13th card) having no such indication.

If a deck of cards is printed then scratching the card surface with a razor or making it dark by exposing it in the sun are other forms of cheating by marked cards. Skilled cheaters can either use juice to mark a deck beforehand prior to introducing it in the game while a ‘daub’ is applied while the game is in progress and sharp players can make out the difference.

Since decks can be marked by bending the cards or tampering them with fingernails, burning the top card is practiced so that a cheat may not use his knowledge by dealing himself or an accomplice a good card or an opponent a harmful one.
